NOVA SCOTIA 'ENERGY INFLATION' AT 19.5% FIRST HALF 2011
Nova Scotia’s energy and price inflation led the country, food inflation was second fastest after British Columbia. Energy prices have risen by 19.8 percent in Nova Scotia, faster than anywhere else in the country (National: 15.7 per cent). This is explained by three phenomena:
1. The larger presence of fuel oil in the home heating mix, which exposes Nova Scotia consumers to world oil prices through their home heat. 2. Outside Atlantic Canada, natural gas is a much more important fuel for home heating and its prices have fallen by 4.6 per cent. 3. Electricity prices had a regulated price increase in January, making electricity price inflation 5.5 per cent in Nova Scotia, compared with 0.4 per cent nationally.
Gasoline price inflation has actually been lower in Nova Scotia than in the rest of the country. Gas prices have risen 25.7 per cent in Nova Scotia, compared with 28.5 per cent nationally.
